The Joy of Giving In

Twitter
I was walking at Balboa Park when the blossom of a lotus called my attention. I stopped, and enjoyed the moment of watching and drawing inspiration from their beauty.

While I was taking a picture of the lotus flowers, suddenly a bumblebee appeared and enjoyed working on the blossom.

Nature was so good, giving me an additional treat. Suddenly a bee followed on bumblebee.

What a joy it was to be treated with nature's surprises, I just stopped for the lotus flower, and the bumble bee and bee came in to add more life to the pictures. I was planning to inch a little bit closer and take a good picture, when, suddenly, a little voice from behind asked me, "Can I also take a picture?"

It was from a little girl. Though there was a lot of open space for both of us to take a picture, but I believe she believed where I stood was the best angle to take the picture, so I smiled to her and said, "Sure, go ahead."

She smiled back, hurriedly say "thank you" then she was lost in taking pictures of the flower. What a sight, what a joy, to see a little girl also inspired with her surroundings. Knowing her parents must be looking from somewhere, I did not attempt to take her a picture nor ask her to take her a picture for that will take sometime from her to capture the moment she wanted. Instead, I just watched her happily taking the shots. It is during these times, where the joy of giving in is so much more than the joy of taking pictures.

  1. Your beautiful post reminds me of the quote by John Muir, "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks."

Sometimes when I see deer in the canyon, I'm tempted to go off the trail and follow them to get additional pictures. But I receive more pleasure allowing wildlife to retreat into their natural habitat without the stress of being stalked.

  2. This is another joys of a simple life, which cannot be bought or asked for.
It comes by itself, when we are in it.

  3. I adore lotus flowers Betchai. The details in the flower petals and the bees are fantastic and what a surprise and great timing to have them appear while you are photographing. It must have been such a joy to see a child so inspired by nature to be taking photos as well. What a heartwarming post. Thank you Betchai.

  6. What a wonderful post. So calm, serene, and poetic. Nature is beautiful, although I am not a very big fan of bees.

  8. I think things like this are also some of my favorite moments when I am at nature parks. When I am able to help somebody, especially a child, with a small thing like this. You got some great photos as well.

  16. Miss Beth,
Very nice pictures! The center of the flower looks like an inverted thimble...

And so kind of you to share your spot... A photographer being kind to another photographer (in the making perhaps...).

Miss Beth, fyi, you may want to check out the news on Sir Allan Hugo...

  19. Hi Betchai, I stumbled upon your blog, maybe thru Diane AZ, and I am loving your photos. I am a lover of lilies (hence my blog header). I am reading your other outdoor and travel posts, and they are so beautiful. We did a 5-day road trip on the N395 to Mammoth last May and we were considering of going back in the Fall. But seeing your photos make us want to make a U-turn.
P.S. I am 50/50 Chinese Filipino living here in the LA area.

  24. Hi Betchai!Pretty flowers, eh? The government will sponsor growing lotus here in abandoned ponds that used to culture Tilapia. This way,the ponds will be productive again. Why lotus?Because it is easy to grow and maintain and all parts of this plant are usable. It is expected to yield huge revenues and livelihood for our kababayans.
