Point Reyes National Seashore, CA

Point Reyes National Seashore
Point Reyes National Seashore is one of the beautiful nature escapes from San Francisco. We went here for a short day trip from San Francisco last spring 2007. Our day trip also included Muir Woods National Monument and Marin Headlands. Most of the pictures in my post about The Golden Gate Bridge is from Marin Headlands.

From San Francisco, we drove Northwest to Point Reyes National Seashore. In just about 1.5 hours from San Francisco, it felt like we were in a different world. The beautiful city of San Francisco disappeared, and what we were seeing was the rural coastline of Point Reyes.
Fogs are common in Point Reyes as you see in the below picture. The weather here is comfortably warm and dry in the summer, and cold and rainy in winter, similar to Mediterranean weather. However, because this is at the tip most of the peninsula, the beaches and headlands in Point Reyes often have moderate to strong winds.
At the time we were there, we were not able to visit the Point Reyes Lighthouse because it was extremely windy and the stairs to the lighthouse was closed. Though we were simply just a short distance to the lighthouse but we could not see the lighthouse at all because of very thick fog.
There are many hiking trails at Point Reyes which range from short to long, easy to moderately strenuous.
For more travel information about Point Reyes National Seashore, you can visit the park site- Point Reyes National Seashore, CA and/or wikitravel's Point Reyes National Seashore.
On our way back to San Francisco, we stopped at Muir Woods National Monument, which is only about 30 minutes drive from SF.
If you are visiting San Francisco, and have plans of exploring the beautiful nature escapes near and around the area, you may consider this short day trip exploring these two uniquely beautiful nature parks.
