Keeping Active In Your Senior Years

If you are nearing or past the age of retirement, you're probably glad to quit working, but you certainly not ready to give up on enjoying life. There is so much more to see and do, and still many years left to accomplish some of your most cherished goals. You should be aware that the longer you stay active, fit, and healthy, the more "golden" years you will be able to enjoy.

You've Got To Get Out And About

Keeping both your mind and body engaged and as active as possible is the key to enjoying a long and healthy "golden age" after your retirement. While staying sedentary for a time may be relaxing and easy to achieve, it's also an unfortunate way to let your muscles degenerate through lack of use. So, to some degree, you simply don't have a choice: You've got to get out and about, and on your feet, for at least a few hours per day!

No Need To Go To Extremes

This doesn't mean that you need to take up extreme snow boarding or mountain biking. You can do your body a lot of good by taking a half hour long walk around the block a few days a week. If you've always loved to golf, keep at it. And if you can find the time and energy to spend a few hours at the gym each week, by all means, do so.

Keep Your Mind And Body Engaged

It's equally important to seniors to keep both their minds and bodies fully engaged. If you enjoy learning new games or hobbies, there's no reason to cease such activity once you've retired from working full time. It's especially important to keep your memory nice and sharp. If you enjoy playing memory games, such as crossword puzzles or Words With Friends, this is an excellent way to keep your memory fresh and your synapses firing on all cylinders.

Increase Your Life Expectancy

Staying active in your senior years has been shown to not only increase your quality of life, but also your overall life expectancy. This is excellent news for seniors who are just now entering their "golden years". Keeping your body fit and healthy not only leads to a sharp reduction in your chances of developing cardiovascular disease, but also gives you significant protection against the progressive degeneration caused by such conditions as Alzheimer's.

Keeping Active Is Its Own Reward

However you choose to keep active, you will soon be aware that staying in shape is its own reward. Your senior years are yours to enjoy in whatever manner you see fit. Staying active not only keeps your remaining goals and aspirations fresh in your mind, but also furnishes you the power to keep on going until you accomplish them. So don't ever feel that your life is anywhere near its end - you've got many more miles to go before you rest!
