5 Things to Check on your Car before Setting off on a Road Trip

Twitter
DESERT ROAD TRIP, FALL 2010

A road trip can be a long time in the planning. You have to pack suitable clothes for your destination and research accommodation choices. Hats, cameras, medication, pillows, food and drinks are all necessities for a road trip but none of this will do you any good if your car is not in top condition. A well serviced and checked vehicle will make your road trip adventure smooth going.

Check Air Pressure

Check that the tyres on your car and also the spare tyre have the correct pressure. You can do this yourself at a service station or have a full safety check done at a mechanics. Never exceed the maximum pressure.

Check light and signal functions are working

Get a friend or family member to check that all lights and indicators are working when you flick them on. If there are problems, you may need to replace a bulb or a fuse. For safety, all lights and signals should be in correct working order. Always have some spare bulbs or fuses in the glove compartment when travelling.

Check you have adequate survival tools

Up to date hard maps should be kept in the car, in case there is no phone service or the GPS is out of range. Make sure you have a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, torch, an inflated spare tyre and water in your car when setting off on a road trip. An in-car phone charger is also a good idea. Test it before you commence your journey. If travelling with young ones, some snacks and extra water should be carried.

Check Fluids

If your car is due for an oil change, do it before you set off on your trip. A long road trip may put extra stress on an engine, so changing the oil and getting rid of the sludge that accumulates will make the car run better. Also check the coolant, water and brake level fluids. This is also a good time to check air and oil filters.

Check tyre wear

For long road trips, it is essential that you have adequate tread left on your tyres. Worn tyres can cause blowouts, which not only damages the car but could put you in a dangerous situation should a tyre deflate at speed. Significant damage could be caused to your vehicle if the blowout causes you to lose control and run off the road.

It is always a good idea to clean the windows, mirrors, windscreen and rear window of your car before undertaking any road trip. This will give you clearer visibility. For peace of mind, you can take your car to a fully qualified automotive service like Diff Lapping QLD who will do a full safety check before you set off on your road trip. A road trip can be exciting and will create many memorable moments. The last thing you want to spoil your trip is car problems. Having a thorough car check done before you leave will make your trip much more pleasurable.

  9. Oh so true! I am usually a "grab your keys and turn on the ignition" type of driver. One unforgettable experience was that I run out of fuel in the middle of a busy street! Could you just imagine the traffic jam I caused? And the traffic citation ticket I got for "obstruction to the flow of traffic." That taught me a lesson. Now, I turned into an O-C driver. Checking each and every little thing before I roll out of the driveway.

  14. To be prepared for a long trip using your car is very important. Things that we do before the long trip is to fill up the tank full so that our trip will not cut short. Tires are also checked so that we'll have no flat tires during the trip. Of course, the tools that we need are prepared too so that when we encounter problems, we can fix it right away. :)
